Rocky Waters Motor Inn
Historic Rocky Waters Inn aimed to transform a run-down 1940s motor lodge in Gatlinburg, Tennessee into a world-class hotel destination, offering a high-design alternative in a region dominated by heavy tourism. Our design embraced the property's original structures and "snake in the woods" layout: a chain of rag tag buildings gracefully winding through the mountain, right along the river's edge, over time losing their charm and structural integrity.
To revitalize the property, we began by adding a simple but striking exterior wood screen wall. This feature not only ensures privacy for guests despite the building's close proximity to the street, but also transforms the structure into a glowing beacon—a lantern that illuminates the surroundings and captivates passersby.
For the guest rooms, we focused on using warm, wood tones and custom furnishings to create a soft and inviting atmosphere. The balconies, which playfully extend over the river, were carefully redesigned to offer one-of-a-kind spaces where guests could even try their hand at fly fishing right from their rooms, should they choose!
By engaging the local community and commissioning regional talent, the project has sparked a profound appreciation for the transformative power of design while showcasing the unique qualities of the area. Historic Rocky Waters Inn stands as a true celebration of place, people, and thoughtful design.
