Locust
Locust is a Japanese-inspired restaurant. Our design goals were to create a casual, intimate, home-like atmosphere for guests within the existing structure and new addition. The kitchen is the visual and functional centerpiece, with the Heko unit as its heart. It is a base for Chef Trevor Moran to express his culinary creativity. The restaurant's large windows grant diners a view of 12 South's excitement while giving the passer-by a picture of the magic inside. The design boasts stainless steel countertops created by Gills by Demant and custom cabinets by Arbol Co. Details in the wood connections and the unfolded origami-like tile backsplash pay homage to the source of inspiration. Interior walls are finished with stucco, and cedar boards clad the ceiling inside and outside, providing warmth and continuity. The restaurant's low profile works with the scale of the street, humbling the structure while calling attention to the activity inside.
